Learners are trained in a range of outdoor adventure activities, including hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, abseiling, 4×4 driving, and camping. By the end of the program, participants will be multi-skilled across various adventure disciplines, enhancing their employability in diverse roles within the tourism and adventure industry. This also enables adventure organisations to offer a broader range of activities to paying clients, adding value and flexibility to their services.

Phase One – Induction and Theory Training

Learners gain essential knowledge to interact with clients, manage groups, and conduct guided adventures safely.

  • Duration: 3 weeks

  • Focus: Client care, safety, group management, tourism basics

  • Includes: Classroom theory and practical exercises

Phase Two – Practical Training

Hands-on training in adventure activities like hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, abseiling, 4×4, and camping.

  • Duration: 12 days

  • Focus: Multi-adventure skills using real equipment

  • Outcome: Prepared for diverse adventure roles

Phase Three – Workplace Guide

Larners apply skills in real work settings to complete practical hours and build their portfolio.

  • Duration: 5 days

  • Focus: Workplace tasks, evidence gathering, reporting

  • Outcome: Practical experience and qualification support

Phase Four – Summative Assessment

Learners are evaluated on their theory and practical skills through written tests and a multi-day guided adventure experience.

  • Duration: 7 days

  • Focus: Written test (70% pass), planning and leading a 5-day adventure tour

  • Activities: Kayaking, biking, hiking, abseiling, 4×4, first aid, and tourism knowledge

  • Outcome: Demonstrate competence in real-world guiding and meet Cathsseta standards

Phase Five – Moderation

An independent moderator reviews each learner’s portfolio to verify competency.

  • Duration: 1 week

  • Resources: Complete Portfolio of Evidence

  • Outcome: Achieve official status as a “Competent” Adventure Tourist Guide

Phase Six – Registration

Final documentation is submitted to register learners as certified adventure guides.

  • Duration: 1 week

  • Requirements: ID, first aid certificate, Cathsseta certificate, code of conduct

  • Outcome: Registered Adventure Guide with the Provincial Registrar and National Department of Tourism
